Olive Trees (Olea europaea)

The Olive Tree is an evergreen tree or shrub native to the Mediterranean, Asia and parts of Africa. It is short and squat, and rarely exceeds 8–15 meters in height. The silvery green leaves are oblong in shape, measuring 4–10 cm long and 1–3 cm wide. The trunk is typically gnarled and twisted.

The small white flowers, with four-cleft calyx and corolla, two stamens and bifid stigma, are borne generally on the last year's wood, in racemes springing from the axils of the leaves.

The fruit is a small drupe 1–2.5 cm long, thinner-fleshed and smaller in wild plants than in orchard cultivars. Olives are harvested at the green stage or left to ripen to a rich purple colour (black olive).

Miscanthus sinensis Gold Bar is truly a show-stopper. It is a slower growing than other Miscanthus, but a good, grower eventually reaching 1.6 meters tall. Miscanthus Gold Bar has heavily banded gold stripes on a bottle green leaf from the base of the grass to its crescent. These horizontal gold bars are much closer together than other banded Miscanthus and give Miscanthus Gold Bar a theatrical look. Exceptionally upright and compact in habit make this new grass perfect for large containers or in small urban gardens. Burgundy inflorescences appear just above the foliage in mid autumn. Festuca Glauca Elijah Blue

This is a mystical, azure-blue grass with highly ornamental, stiff, needle-like foliage and short spikes of attractive blue-green flowers that gradually fade to light brown. It forms thick tufts of wiry blades that look brilliant when combined with purple-flowering perennials or grown in terracotta pots. The flower heads make dense, upright tussocks that are perfect for incorporating into a rockery garden situation or using as a groundcover plant at the front of sunny, well-drained border. Drought tolerant once established, the foliage colour is most vibrant if the plant is kept dry during the summer.

 

Soil: Any well-drained soil

Rate of Growth: Average

Flowering Period: June to July

Flower Colour: Steel blue

Other Features: The truest blue of all dwarf grasses which makes a great addition to the rock garden, becoming totally drought tolerant once established

Hardiness: Fully hardy

Garden Care: Water sparingly during the summer months to ensure the plant maintains a good colouration whilst not drying. Comb through the plant to remove dead foliage in the winter
